Research Interests
I am studying place cells within the hippocampus. These are neurons whose activity is modulated by an animal's current location within an environment. Place cell activity can also be modulated by an animal's future or past behaviour. I am interested in which inputs to the hippocampus contribute to this activity and where it is generated. I am using a combination of behavioural tasks, in vivo single-unit recording and lesions or localized inactivation techniques in both rats and mice to study the hippocampus and connected brain areas.

Public Engagement
I run the Get Connected Workshop which is aimed at Primary 7 students. We usually take it out to several primary schools each year and this year ran it as part of the Midlothian Science Festival. The workshop is a fun and interactive one hour session focused on the connections between neurons in the brain and the changes that take place as a child develops into an adult
