Research Interests
I am investigating different cell types in two brain areas known as the medial entorhinal cortex and the subiculum. Different cells in these areas carry information about boundaries within an environment, and about which way an animal is facing within a given environment. I am interested in discovering whether these different cell types are important in helping an animal to tell the difference between very similar environments. This question is based on work showing that animals struggle to tell the difference between similar looking rooms if the rooms are arranged next to one another. However, when the rooms are arranged in a semicircle so an animal faces a different way in each room, these rooms are more easily distinguished.
